Project Update for the Week of April 30

Bus on Shoulder Starting May 1

Bus on shoulder operations on US 36 begin this Sunday, May 1. From that day on, RTD’s Flatiron Flyer buses on US 36 will have another tool to provide frequent and reliable service to its passengers during times of traffic congestion with the start of bus on shoulder operations. Buses can operate on the shoulder only under these certain conditions:

  • The traffic speed in the general purpose lanes is less than 35 mph any time of day
  • The bus cannot exceed the speed of general purpose traffic by more than 15 mph, with the maximum speed being 35 mph

Private vehicles must remain in the general purpose lanes but broken down vehicles and emergency responders can still use the shoulder.

Eastbound and Westbound US 36 Restrictions

Expect various nighttime lane restrictions for final surface testing from Federal Boulevard to Foothills Parkway, May 1-7, 9 p.m.-5:30 a.m. One lane will remain open at all times.

Foothills Parkway On-Ramp to Eastbound US 36

The Foothills Parkway on-ramp to eastbound US 36 will be closed May 3, 10 p.m.- 5:30 a.m., for restriping of the new roadway alignment.  Detours will be clearly marked.

Eastbound and Westbound US 36 Traffic Realignment between Davidson Mesa Overlook and Foothills Parkway

Traffic will be realigned in both directions starting at 9 p.m. on Monday, May 2. This alignment will take place approximately a quarter of a mile west of Foothills Parkway to a quarter of a mile east of the South Boulder Creek bridge (near the Davidson Mesa Scenic Overlook). Traffic in both directions will have reduced shoulders and speeds to allow this phased work to begin. The number of travel lanes will not be impacted during this work with two lanes of travel remaining open at all times during daytime hours. Between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., Friday and Saturday, lanes could possibly be restricted to one through lane. This alignment is necessary for work on the approach slabs at the South Boulder Creek bridge, and is being phased over the course of the next two months.
